Bowel Management Product Update

Situation

In March of 2018 Hollister informed Providence St. Joseph Health that they would be exiting the Bowel Management market. Within PSJH, Hollister was being utilized at nine individual ministries.

Background

We brought this information to the Nursing Product Council (NPC) and the Advanced Wound Care (AWC) Subject Matter Expert (SME) group. A brief review was done to determine if we could standardize to one vendor to reduce variation. The decision from both groups was that at this time we could standardize to two vendors for this product category, Bard Dignishield and the Convatec Flexi Seal.

This information was taken to the nine facility teams and the decision was made to look at Convatec at each of the Hollister facilities and if there were no concerns, move to Convatec. If there were concerns then the ministry could look to the Bard product.

Assessment

Each Hollister ministry made a product selection decision based on the stakeholders and SME’s. All other ministries will remain unchanged.

Recommendation

Move the requesting ministries to the chosen product line. Nursing will manage the education. This conversion will take place by August 30, 2018.

Incontinence Product Update

Situation

An opportunity was presented to move all of PSJH to a single source manufacturer in the category of incontinence.

Background

  • In April 2019, Nursing Product Council (NPC) was asked to evaluate this product category. They were presented with the product cross reference from the three current vendors used within PSJH.
  • After evaluation of products with key stakeholders in each of the regions a decision was made to move to the Medline product.
  • A formulary was established.

Assessment

The Medline Incontinence products were evaluated and determined to be equivalent or superior to the other products that were being used.

Recommendation

  • Be aware that this product category will be changing
  • Check with your local REH team for specific conversion dates
  • If education is needed please reach out to your local Medline representative
  • The local Medline rep would like to be in your ministry to assist with this conversion and ease your way

Perineal Cleansing Cloth Product Update

Situation

In August of 2017, a decision was made from the Nursing Product Council to move to the Medline patient cleansing product category. Since that time we have discovered that we have two perineal cleansing cloths within our system, both on committed contracts.

Background

  • There was a disruption in the product category of Patient Cleansing last year. Providence St. Joseph Health worked quickly to provide product to our patients and caregivers.
  • The Medline product line was evaluated and deemed effective and fiscally sound.
  • One of the products in this category is the ReadyCleanse Perineal Care Cleansing Cloth.
  • Within the same time frame, the Provon Surestep post-insertion Foley care wipe was added to our Bard Urinary Catheter committed contract.

Assessment

There is a need to have post-Foley care wipes available to our caregivers to reduce and eliminate Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infections (CAUTI). Both of the products we have in the system will provide this care.

Recommendation

Move to the Medline ReadyCleanse Perineal Care Cleansing Cloth to provide the needed care, to promote standardization of products and practice, and to assist in our responsibility to stewardship.

Diapers and Wipes Product Update

Situation

PSJH continues to align product agreements leveraging the purchasing power of our large organization, our partnership with our GPO, Vizient, and other key strategic supplier partners. The ProvSource Diapers agreement is with Kimberly-Clark.

Background

  • ProvSource is a customized group purchasing partnership between PSJH, its affiliated facilities and the Vizient GPO. Under this model, PJSH benefits from the strong purchasing power and resources of Vizient, while increasing the opportunity to enhance or tailor contracts based on specific custom needs. The Kimberly-Clark diapers are covered within a ProvSource agreement. There is a diaper formulary that has been identified.
  • The Kimberly Clark diapers were evaluated in all of the SJH ministries and the cross reference was validated.

Assessment

  • The Kimberly Clark diapers were found to be equivalent or superior to the current products.
  • We will begin the conversion of diapers and wipes within the ministries that are not compliant to our ProvSource contract.
  • Diapers will be brought in first, then 2 to 3 weeks later the wipes will be brought in. This will help us to identify any concerns for our patients, with either product

Recommendation

Convert to the Kimberly Clark “Huggies” diapers and wipes.

Exam Gloves Product Update

Situation

Alignment to ProvSource exam glove contract is scheduled for Providence St. Joseph Health. PSJH continues to align product agreements leveraging the purchasing power of our large organization, our partnership with our Vizient GPO and other key strategic supplier partners. The exam glove ProvSource agreement is with Medline.

There is an exam glove formulary identified with Medline.
  • Samples of the formulary gloves were supplied to all ministries in late June and early July. No concerns were reported

Assessment

Moving to the Medline glove meets the clinical needs and the enterprise strategy of variation reduction under our ProvSource Contract.

Recommendation

Convert to the Medline gloves with a conversion goal of August 15, 2018. Reach out to your Medline local representative with any questions or needs.
